Previous Command -- Next Command

The Sharia of Moses in the TORA
Part 1 - The 248 Positive Commandments of the Tora

38 - THE HIGH PRIEST MARRYING ONLY A VIRGIN

Leviticus 21:13 -- “And he shall take a wife in her virginity.”

The Talmud says explicitly: “Rabbi Akiba held that even the offspring of a union which was merely contrary to a positive commandment was a bastard”*, and as an example of a union which is merely contrary to a positive commandment they give the case of a high priest who has connection with a woman who is not a virgin: because it is an accepted principle that a negative commandment which is derived from a positive commandment has the force of a positive commandment. It is thus clear that this is a positive commandment; and the Talmud further says: “The high priest is commanded to marry a virgin.”**
