The Sharia of Moses in the TORA
Part 1 - The 248 Positive Commandments of the Tora

54 - REJOICING ON THE FESTIVALS

Deuteronomy 16:14 -- “And you shall rejoice in your feast, you and your son and your daughter, your male servant and your female servant and the Levite, the stranger and the fatherless and the widow, who are within your gates.”
Deuteronomy 27:7 -- “You shall offer peace offerings, and shall eat there, and rejoice before the LORD your God.”

The words, you shall rejoice in your feast, include the further injunction of the sages that the Jews are to rejoice by all possible modes of rejoicing, as by eating meat on the festivals, drinking wine, putting on new garments, distributing fruits and sweetmeats to children and women, and making merry with musical instruments and dancing in the sanctuary. However, the most binding of these modes of rejoicing is the drinking of wine, because that is specially associated with rejoicing.
