As showing the determination of the sages to make the law serve the ends of justice, the following Mishnah, in connection with this commandment, is of interest: “Formerly the buyer used to hide himself on the last day of the twelve months, so that (the house) might be his for ever; but Hillel the Elder ordained that he (who had sold it) could deposit his money in a chamber, and break down the door and enter, and that the other, when he would, might come and take his money.”* * Arak. 31b
