No manner of work shall be done on them; but that which everyone must eat--that only may be prepared by you.”
Exodus 23:15 -- “And you shall count for yourselves from the day after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering: seven Sabbaths shall be completed.”
According to Maimonides, work on mid-festival days is Scripturally permissible; and the sages who ruled against it were nevertheless lenient where damage might be occasioned by delay.* Heavy labor, however, should be avoided,** and no labor may be done if deliberately deferred to the mid-festival days.*** * Mishneh Torah, Zmanim, Hilchoth Yom Tov VII, 1, Commentaries ** Ibid., 2 *** ibid., 4 “The reason for the Passover is well known. It is kept seven days, because the period of seven days is the unit of time intermediate between a day and a month. It is also known how great is the importance of this period in Nature, and in many religious duties. For the Law always follows Nature, and in some respects brings it to perfection; for Nature is not capable of designing and thinking, whilst the Law is the result of the wisdom and guidance of God, who is the author of the intellect of all rational beings.”* * Moreh Nebuchim III, 43
