The Sharia of Moses in the TORA
Part 1 - The 248 Positive Commandments of the Tora

212 - BE FRUITFUL AND MULTIPLY

Genesis 1:28 -- “Then God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”
Genesis 9:7 -- “And as for you, be fruitful and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth and multiply in it.”

The Talmud says that on the night of wedding a virgin the bridegroom is exempt from reciting the Shema because he is engaged in fulfilling a commandment.*

* Ber. 16a (Sonc. Ed. P. 95)

This commandment does not apply to women: the Talmud says explicitly, “The duty to be fruitful and multiply is laid on the man, not on the woman.”*

* Yeb. 65b (Sonc. Ed. P. 437)
