The object of the commandment is stated in Scripture thus: that his name (i.e. of the deceased) may not be blotted out of Israel. (Deuteronomy 25:6). It is customary in our days to perform Chalitzah* rather than to take a childless brother’s widow in marriage, as provided by this commandment. * See following commandment
