The Sharia of Moses in the TORA
Part 1 - The 248 Positive Commandments of the Tora

216 - THE LAW LEVIRATE MARRIAGE

Deuteronomy 25:5 -- "If brothers dwell together, and one of them dies and has no son, the widow of the dead man shall not be married to a stranger outside the family; her husband's brother shall go in to her, take her as his wife, and perform the duty of a husband's brother to her.”

The object of the commandment is stated in Scripture thus: that his name (i.e. of the deceased) may not be blotted out of Israel. (Deuteronomy 25:6).

It is customary in our days to perform Chalitzah* rather than to take a childless brother’s widow in marriage, as provided by this commandment.
