The Sharia of Moses in the TORA
Part 1 - The 248 Positive Commandments of the Tora

225 - THE LAW OF MANSLAUGHTER

Numbers 35:25 -- “So the congregation shall deliver the manslayer from the hand of the avenger of blood, and the congregation shall return him to the city of refuge where he had fled, and he shall remain there until the death of the high priest who was anointed with the holy oil.”

According to Maimonides, “a person who killed another person unintentionally must go into exile, because the anger of the avenger of blood (Numbers 35:19) cools down while the cause of the mischief is out of sight. The chance of retuning from the exile depends on the death of the High Priest, the most honored of men, and the friend of all Israel. By his death the relative of the slain person becomes reconciled; for it is a natural phenomenon that we find consolation in our misfortunes when the same misfortune or a greater one has befallen another person.”*
