It shall not be built again. 17 So none of the accursed things shall remain in your hand, that the LORD may turn from the fierceness of His anger and show you mercy, have compassion on you and multiply you, just as He swore to your fathers”
This prohibition applies also to property belonging to the righteous men in the city, that is, those inhabitants who were not led astray with the majority. Their belongings must be burnt with the rest of the goods in the city.* * Mishneh Torah, Mada, Hilchoth Abodath Kochabim IV, 7
Speaking of the object of this commandment, the sages comment: “So none of the accursed things shall remain in your hand, that the LORD may turn from the fierceness of His anger and show you mercy, have compassion on you and multiply you: so long as the wicked exist in the world, the fierceness of His anger is in the world; when the wicked perish from the world, the fierceness of His anger will disappear from the world.”* * Sanh. IIIb
