With all your offerings you shall offer salt.”
From its use as a preservative and as an antidote to decay, salt in Jewish religious thought became a symbol of permanence. Scripture speaks of the salt of the covenant of thy God (Lev. II, 13), thus intimating that the presence of salt with every sacrifice symbolizes the enduring character of God’s covenant with Israel (cf. Num. XVIII, 19; II Chron. XIII, 5); or, as the author of the “Sefer ha-Chinuch” suggests, that it reminds the worshipper of the immortality of his soul, the purity of which he must constantly guard. |
