The Sharia of Moses in the TORA
Part 2 - The 365 Prohibitions of the Tora

181 - EATING TEREFAH

Exodus 22:31 -- “And you shall be holy men to Me: you shall not eat meat torn by beasts in the field; you shall throw it to the dogs.”
Leviticus 22:8 -- “Whatever dies naturally or is torn by beasts he shall not eat, to defile himself with it: I am the LORD.”

By this prohibition, it is forbidden to eat terefah, i.e. the flesh of an animal torn by a wild beast, or by a wild bird; or the flesh of any injured or diseased animal which, although ritually slaughtered, is known to be one which could not have lived more than a year; or flesh torn from a living clean beast.

One who eats an olive’s size of it is Scripturally liable to whipping.

In his “Mishneh Torah”, Maimonides enumerates seventy diseases and injuries which render a beast terefah.*
