229 - FORSAKING THE LEVITES


Deuteronomy 12:19 -- “Take heed to yourself that you do not forsake the Levite as long as you live in your land.”

From his “Mishneh Torah” it is obvious that Maimonides regarded the commandment under consideration as applying also to the poor and the unfortunate; only the obligation to the Levite is greater than that to the poor, since the Levite never received a portion in the Land.* Outside the Land of Israel, the obligation to the Levite is not greater than that to toe poor Israelite.**
