A glowing tribute to the proselyte is contained in a Responsum written by Maimonides in answer to a proselyte’s question whether he may use in prayer the term “God of our fathers”. Maimonides answers that not only is he permitted to do so, seeing that Abraham was the father of all those who believe in the Unity of God, but that his status as a Jew is in a way even superior to that of the Israelites; for Israel’s lineal descent is from the patriarchs, while that of the proselyte is from the Holy One, blessed be He, as the prophet Isaiah said: “One will say, 'I am the LORD's'; another will call himself by the name of Jacob”.* * Isa.
