Part 2 - The 365 Prohibitions of the Tora

270 - LEAVING A TRAPPED PERSON

Exodus 23:5 -- “If you see the donkey of one who hates you lying under its burden, and you would refrain from helping it, you shall surely help him with it.”
Deuteronomy 22:4 --You shall not see your brother's donkey or his ox fall down along the road, and hide yourself from them; you shall surely help him lift them up again.”

“Why then does the verse say, you shall surely help him with it? To teach us that if the owner is at hand, and goes away and sits down, saying, ‘Since the obligation is upon you, you unload’, the other person is exempt from unloading, because it says: help him with it. If, however, the owner is an old man or is ill, the other person is obliged to load and unload alone.”*
