A Ministry Course on Biblical Content in the Koran
STAGE 2 - Biblical PASSAGES and Biblical PERSONALITIES in the Koran
UNIT 05 - CORRELATE: ADAM in Genesis 1 to 5 and in the Koran

083 - Introduction to UNIT 05

Having found and compiled all the verses of the Koran that seem to have been influenced by biblical passages dealing with a specific subject or personality, you need to take another step to begin to analyze the Koran biblically. For the purposes of simplifying our discussion here, we will restrict our attention to the biblical personalities listed above in Unit 04, which have been taken up recognizably in verses and passages of the Koran.

This next step can also be fairly difficult, because the Koran never quotes directly from the Bible. The reason is simple: The Bible was written in Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek, but the Koran was written in Arabic. So, the closest you can get between the Bible and the Koran is for the Koran to transliterate or to translate biblical material. This is never done in the Koran on the level of passages or verses, but only on the level of words and sometimes of phrases. Practically this means that the Koran never directly quoted the Bible. Rather this Muslim book has considerably changed biblical content in its verses, which seem to have been influenced by the Bible. In addition you often find that key passages of the Bible on a certain biblical personality have been omitted in the Koran, even though the Koran has taken up this biblical personality, and that key passages of the Koran about that biblical personality have no biblical parallels and were therefore added by the Koran, the Koran having associated them with the same biblical personality. These circumstances make it often hard to correlate koranic verses to respective biblical verses on a specific biblical personality taken up in the Koran. These three basic ways, in which the Koran has taken up biblical material (changing, omitting and adding), can be seen not only on the level of passages, but also on the level of sentences, of phrases and even on the level of single words.

In correlating biblical material to koranic material about a biblical personality we will in this step focus our attention on the level of passages and verses in the Bible and the Koran regarding one single biblical personality. The correlation on the level of sentences, phrases and words will be the subject matter of the next four steps (Units 06 to 09).
