14 - SWEARING BY AN IDOL

Exodus 23:13 -- “And in all that I have said to you, be circumspect and make no mention of the name of other gods, nor let it be heard from your mouth.”

In Sanhedrin it is said: and make no mention of the name of other gods – this means that one may not say to his friend, Wait for me at the place of such –and-such an idol.”*

* Sanh. 63b (Sonc. ed. p. 431)

The Gemara of Sanhedrin says, in connection with the Rabbinical prohibition of kissing or embracing an idol, or sweeping the floor before it, and similar actions indicating respect and love for it: “For none of these actions is the offender whipped,* except for vowing or swearing by the name of an idol.”**

* The reason being that they are all included in one general prohibition: Do not turn to idols – Lev 19: 4, for which no punishment is prescribed (Sanh. 63a, Rashi)
** Sanh. 63a, b (Sonc. ed. pp. 429ff)
