The Sharia of Moses in the TORA
Part 2 - The 365 Prohibitions of the Tora

194 - DRINKING YAIN NESECH

Deuteronomy 32:38 -- “Who ate the fat of their sacrifices, and drank the wine of their drink offering? Let them rise and help you, and be your refuge.”

According to Nachmanides, the prohibition of drinking yain nesech should be derived from the following verse: “lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they play the harlot with their gods and make sacrifice to their gods, and one of them invites you and you eat of his sacrifice” (Exodus 34:15). It is of interest to note that the author of the Sefer ha-Chinuch, who invariably follows Maimonides’ treatment of the Commandments, here adopts the view of his critic, Nachmanides.
