4. WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?

Summary

Matthew 1:19-21 -- 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. 20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins."
John 1:33 -- I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'
Luke 4:18-21 -- 18 "The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD." 20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, "Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."
John 6:63 -- It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.
John 3:5-6 -- 5 Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Matthew 5:3-4 -- 3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Luke 11:9-13 -- 9 So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11 If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!
Matthew 6:8-11 -- 8 For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. 9 In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
John 14:16-18, 21- 23, 26- 27 -- 16 "And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever — 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. … 21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him." 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, "Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?" 23 Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. … 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
John 20:21-23 -- 21 So Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you." 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."
Luke 24:49 -- Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.
Acts 1:4-5, 8 -- 4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, "which," He said, "you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." … 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

Summary

When Jesus had reconciled the world with God, through his atoning death, it became possible for the blessing from this sacrifice to be poured out on the waiting believers. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of the Father and the Spirit of the Son. He is true God from the true God. He himself is the everlasting life, the peace and the love of God. He is truthful. He is truth itself. He is altogether the Holy One. If anyone has not known the Holy Spirit yet, or was unable to recognize his essence, then let him look at Jesus, for he is He who was born of the Holy Spirit, and this Spirit was embodied in him. The character and temperament of Christ clarify the character and temperament of the Holy Spirit in detail.

Since the pouring out of the Holy Spirit on those who prayed and waited for the promise of the Father, the followers of Jesus have become the temple of the Holy Spirit. They are called to bear witness to the Son of God, to his reconciliation, and to his resurrection. This is why the church is called the spiritual body of Christ, or the family of the heavenly Father. All those who were born of the water of repentance and of the spirit of life became children of God, for their heavenly Father had adopted them. He had regenerated them, and taken them as his legitimate children. It is not possible to liken the Holy Spirit to the mind of man, because the spirit and the mind of man are created, and are transient sinners, whereas the Spirit is an innermost essence of God. He is eternal, holy, and endless. Without the gift of God, man remains spiritually blind, dead in sins, and lacking the knowledge of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The divine Spirit establishes true faith, everlasting love, and full assurance of hope and confidence in eternal life.

The Holy Spirit lives and works in full unity with the Father and the Son. The three are one in love, humility, and power. The authority of the Father is present in the Holy Spirit. How great is the privilege that we, corrupt mortals, have been purified, been made alive, and been sent to glorify the source of life: the Father and the Son in the power of the Holy Spirit.
