Many Muslims – even the not so religious ones – still believe Christians to be their archenemy. The Crusades are taught as an aggressive attack against Muslims by Christians. For the majority of Muslims, any conflict involving a Muslim is understood to be a war against Islam. Sometimes even charity work can be misconstrued as attack against Islam.
