073 - DAVID and his Son SOLOMON in Bible and Koran

BIBLE (1.129 verses): 2 Samuel 1:1 to 1 Kings 11:43

KORAN (72 verses): Suras al-Baqara 2:102-103.251 -- al-Nisa' 4:163 -- al-Ma'ida 5:78 -- al-An'am 6:84 -- al-Isra' 17:55 -- al-Anbiya' 21:78-82 -- al-Naml 27:15-45 -- Saba' 34:10-19 -- Sad 38:20-38

BIBLICAL SAMPLE: Our choice here is the parable that the prophet Nathan told David to reveal his adultery and murder as we read in 2 Samuel 12:1-6 -- “1 And the LORD sent Nathan to David. He came to him and said to him, ‘There were two men in a certain city, the one rich and the other poor. 2 The rich man had very many flocks and herds, 3 but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb, which he had bought. And he brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children. It used to eat of his morsel and drink from his cup and lie in his arms, and it was like a daughter to him. 4 Now there came a traveler to the rich man, and he was unwilling to take one of his own flock or herd to prepare for the guest who had come to him, but he took the poor man’s lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him.’ 5 Then David’s anger was greatly kindled against the man, and he said to Nathan, ‘As the Lord lives, the man who has done this deserves to die, 6 and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.’ ”
KORANIC SAMPLE: This dramatic parable seems to have influenced the following passage from the Koran about David. However, Nathan is not mentioned, instead the story is related as having actually taken place in David's home. It can be found in Sura Sad 38:21-24 -- “21 And has there come to you the news of the adversaries, when they climbed over the wall of [his] prayer chamber, 22 when they entered upon David and he was frightened by them? They said, ‘Fear not! (We are) two adversaries, one of whom has wronged the other, so judge between us rightly and do not exceed (what is right) and guide us to the just path. 23 (Truly) this, my brother, has ninety-nine ewes, and I have one ewe (only); so he said, ‘Entrust her to me,’ and he overpowered me in speech.’ 24 (David then) said, ‘He has certainly wronged you in demanding your ewe (in addition) to his ewes. And indeed, many associates oppress one another, except for those who believe and do righteous deeds - and few are they.’ And David thought that we (i.e. Allah) had tried him, and he asked forgiveness from his Lord and fell down bowing (in prostration) and turned (to Allah) in repentance. 25 So we (i.e. Allah) forgave him that; and (truly), he has (the right to) nearness to us (i.e. Allah) and a good place to come back to.”
