The Sharia of Moses in the TORA
Part 1 - The 248 Positive Commandments of the Tora

194 - A ROBBER TO RESTORE THE STOLEN ARTICLE

Leviticus 6:4 -- “Then it shall be, because he has sinned and is guilty, that he shall restore what he has stolen, or the thing which he has extorted, or what was delivered to him for safekeeping, or the lost thing which he found”
Leviticus 19:13 -- “You shall not cheat your neighbor, nor rob him. The wages of him who is hired shall not remain with you all night until morning.”

The Torah lays it down that a robber may be forced to return the very article he took by robbery, so that if he has taken a plank and built it into his house, he is under obligation to return the self-same plank – even though its removal may entail destruction of the house. To promote repentance, however, the sages ruled that payment of the full value of the plank is sufficient. If the object taken has been changed in form – as when wool has been woven into garments – Scriptural law provides only for payment of the value of the wool to the owner.*
