39 - WOMEN WEARING MEN'S CLOTHES OR ADORNMENTS

Deuteronomy 22:5 --A woman shall not wear anything that pertains to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman's garment, for all who do so are an abomination to the LORD your God.”

In his “Moreh Nebuchim”, Maimonides says that the interchange of wearing apparel was connected with idol-worship: “You will find in the book ‘Tomtom’ that a male should wear the colored dress of a woman when he stands before Venus, and a female should wear a buckler and other armor when she stands before Mars. I think that there is also another reason for this injunction, namely, that the interchange of dress begets lust and leads to immorality.” Maimonides also refers to these two reasons in dealing with the next prohibition (40).
