A tevul yom is one who, having contracted any uncleanness for which it is ordained that he shall be unclean until evening, has duly immersed himself in a ritual bath and must still wait for sunset before he is fully clean. A tevul yom was, however, permitted to perform the rite of the Red Heifer.* According to the Mishnah: “The elders of Israel used to go forth before them (i.e. before the priest and the heifer) on foot to the Mount of Olives. There was a place of immersion there; and they had first rendered unclean the priest who was to burn the heifer, because of the Sadduccees: that they should not be able to say: It must be performed only by those on whom the sun has set.”** * See Pos.
