The Sharia of Muhammad in the KORAN

Worship 8 - Holy War (jihaad)

Sura al-Baqara 2:29 (Hanb) - Jihad (Holy War)

2:29 It is he who hath created for you whatsoever is on earth, and then set his mind to [the creation of] heaven, and formed it into seven heavens; he knoweth all things.

Sura al-Baqara 2:85 - Jihad (Holy War)

2:85 Afterwards ye were they who slew one another, and turned several of your [brethren] out of their houses, mutually assisting each other against them with injustice and enmity; but if they come captives unto you, ye redeem them: Yet it is [equally] unlawful for you to dispossess them. Do ye therefore believe in part of the book [of the law], and reject other part thereof? But whoso among you doth this, shall have no other reward than shame in this life, and on the day of resurrection they shall be sent to a most grievous punishment; for God is not regardless of that which ye do.

Sura al-Baqara 2:190 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf+Hanb) - Jihad (Holy War)

2:190 And fight for the religion of God against those who fight against you, but transgress not [by attacking them first], for God loveth not the transgressors.

Sura al-Baqara 2:191 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf+Hanb) - Jihad (Holy War)

2:191 And kill them wherever ye find them, and turn them out of that whereof they have dispossessed you, for temptation [to idolatry] is more grievous than slaughter: Yet fight not against them in the holy temple, until they attack you therein; but if they attack you, slay them [there]. This shall be the reward of the infidels.

Sura al-Baqara 2:192 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

2:192 But if they desist, God is gracious and merciful.

Sura al-Baqara 2:193 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

2:193 Fight therefore against them, until there be no temptation [to idolatry], and the religion be God's: But if they desist, then let there be no hostility, except against the ungodly.

Sura al-Baqara 2:194 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf+Hanb) - Jihad (Holy War)
Sura al-Baqara 2:194 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf+Hanb) - Qisas (Punishment)
Sura al-Baqara 2:194 (Hanb) - Qatl (Murder)

2:194 A sacred month for a sacred month, and the holy limits [of Mecca, if they attack you therein, do ye also attack them therein in] retaliation; and whoever transgresseth against you [by so doing], do ye transgress against him in like manner as he hath transgressed against you, and fear God, and know that God is with those who fear [him].

Sura al-Baqara 2:195 (Shaf) - Zakat (Religious Taxes)
Sura al-Baqara 2:195 - Jihad (Holy War)

2:195 Contribute [out of your substance] toward the defence of the religion of God, and throw not [your selves] with your own hands into perdition; and do good, for God loveth those who do good.

Sura al-Baqara 2:216 (Hanf+Shaf+Hanb) - Jihad (Holy War)

2:216 War is injoined you [against the infidels]; but this is hateful unto you: Yet perchance ye hate a thing which is better for you, and perchance ye love a thing which is worse for you: But God knoweth and ye know not.

Sura al-Baqara 2:217 (Hanf+Shaf+Hanb) - Jihad (Holy War)
Sura al-Baqara 2:217 (Hanb) - Ridda (Apostasy)

2:217 They will ask thee concerning the sacred month, [whether they may] war therein: Answer, to war therein is grievous; but to obstruct the way of God, and infidelity towards him, and [to keep men] from the holy temple, and to drive out his people from thence, is more grievous in the sight of God, and the temptation [to idolatry] is more grievous than to kill [in the sacred months]. They will not cease to war against you, until they turn you from your religion, if they be able: But whoever among you shall turn back from his religion, and die an infidel, their works shall be vain in this world, and the next; they shall be the companions of [hell] fire, they shall remain therein for ever.

Sura al-Baqara 2:224 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)
Sura al-Baqara 2:224 (Shaf) - Talaq (Divorce)
Sura al-Baqara 2:224 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf+Hanb) - Ayman (Oaths)

2:224 Make not God the object of your oaths, that ye will deal justly, and be devout, and make peace among men; for God is he who heareth and knoweth.

Sura al-Baqara 2:251 (Hanb) - Jihad (Holy War)

2:251 Therefore they discomfited them, by the will of God, and David slew Jalut. And God gave him the kingdom and wisdom, and taught him his will, and if God had not prevented men, the one by the other, verily the earth had been corrupted: But God is beneficent towards [his] creatures.

Sura Al Imran 3:121 - Jihad (Holy War)

3:121 [Call to mind] when thou wentest forth early from thy family, that thou mightest prepare the faithful a camp for war; and God heard and knew it;

Sura Al Imran 3:169 (Hanf+Malik) - Jihad (Holy War)

3:169 Thou shalt in no wise reckon those who have been slain [at Ohod] in the cause of God, dead; nay, they are sustained alive with their Lord,

Sura Al Imran 3:200 (Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

3:200 O true believers, be patient, and strive to excel in patience, and be constant-minded, and fear God, that ye may be happy.

Sura al-Nisa' 4:71 (Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

4:71 O true believers, take your [necessary] precaution [against your enemies], and [either] go forth [to war] in separate parties, or go forth all together [in a body].

Sura al-Nisa' 4:74 (Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

4:74 Let them therefore fight for the religion of God, who part with the present life in exchange for that which is to come; for whosoever fighteth for the religion of God, whether he be slain, or be victorious, we will surely give him a great reward.

Sura al-Nisa' 4:75 (Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

4:75 And what ails you, that ye fight not for God's true religion, and [in defence of] the weak among men, women, and children, who say, o Lord, bring us forth from this city, whose inhabitants are wicked; grant us from before thee a protector, and grant us from before thee a defender.

Sura al-Nisa' 4:76 - Jihad (Holy War)

4:76 They who believe fight for the religion of God; but they who believe not fight for the religion of Taghut. Fight therefore against the friends of Satan, for the stratagem of Satan is weak.

Sura al-Nisa' 4:84 (Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

4:84 Fight therefore for the religion of God, and oblige not any to what is difficult, except thy self; however excite the faithful [to war], perhaps God will restrain the courage of the unbelievers; for God is stronger [than they], and more able to punish.

Sura al-Nisa' 4:89 (Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

4:89 They desire that ye should become infidels, as they are infidels, and that ye should be equally [wicked with themselves]. Therefore take not friends from among them, until they fly their country for the religion of God; and if they turn back [from the faith], take them, and kill them where-ever ye find them; and take no friend from among them, nor any helper,

Sura al-Nisa' 4:90 (Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

4:90 except those who go unto a people who are in alliance with you, or those who come unto you, their hearts forbidding them either to fight against you, or to fight against their own people. And if God pleased he would have permitted them to have prevailed against you, and they would have fought against you. But if they depart from you, and fight not against you, and offer you peace, God doth not allow you [to take or kill] or them.

Sura al-Nisa' 4:91 (Shaf+Hanb) - Jihad (Holy War)

4:91 Ye shall find others who are desirous to enter into a confidence with you, and [at the same time] to preserve a confidence with their own people: So often as they return to sedition, they shall be subverted therein; and if they depart not from you, and offer you peace, and restrain their hands [from warring against you], take them and kill them wheresoever ye find them; over these have we granted you a manifest power.

Sura al-Nisa' 4:95 (Hanf+Hanb) - Jihad (Holy War)

4:95 Those believers who sit still [at home], not having any hurt, and those who employ their fortunes and their persons for the religion of God, shall not be held equal. God hath preferred those who employ their fortunes and their persons [in that cause], to a degree [of honour] above those who sit at home: God hath indeed promised every one paradise, but God hath preferred those who fight for the faith before those who sit still,

Sura al-Nisa' 4:98 (Hanf+Hanb) - Jihad (Holy War)

4:98 Except the weak among men, and women, and children, who were not able to find means, and were not directed in the way;

Sura al-Nisa' 4:99 (Hanf) - Jihad (Holy War)

4:99 these peradventure God will pardon, for God is ready to forgive [and] gracious.

Sura al-Nisa' 4:100 (Hanf+Malik) - Jihad (Holy War)

4:100 Whosoever flieth [from his country] for the sake of God's true religion, shall find in the earth many forced [to do the same], and plenty [of provisions]. And whoever departeth from his house, and flieth unto God and his apostle, if death overtake him [in the way], God will be obliged to reward him, for God is gracious [and] merciful.

Sura al-Nisa' 4:101 (Malik+Shaf) - Salat (Liturgical Prayers)
Sura al-Nisa' 4:101 - Jihad (Holy War)

4:101 When ye march [to war] in the earth, it shall be no crime in you if ye shorten your prayers, in case ye fear the infidels may attack you; for the infidels are your open enemy.

Sura al-Nisa' 4:102 (Hanf+Shaf+Hanb) - Salat (Liturgical Prayers)
Sura al-Nisa' 4:102 (Shaf+Hanb) - Jihad (Holy War)

4:102 But when thou, [o prophet], shalt be among them, and shalt pray with them, let a party of them arise to prayer with thee, and let them take their arms; and when they shall have worshipped, let them stand behind you, and let another party come that hath not prayed, and let them pray with thee, and let them be cautious and take their arms. The unbelievers would that ye should neglect your arms and your baggage [while ye pray], that they might turn upon you at once. It shall be no crime in you, if ye be incommoded by rain, or be sick, that ye lay down your arms; but take your [necessary] precaution: God hath prepared for the unbelievers an ignominious punishment.

Sura al-Ma'ida 5:33 (Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)
Sura al-Ma'ida 5:33 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf+Hanb) - Hiraba (Waylay)

5:33 But the recompense of those who fight against God and his apostle, and study to act corruptly in the earth, [shall be], that they shall be slain, or crucified, or have their hands and their feet cut off on the opposite [sides], or be banished the land. This shall be their disgrace in this world, and in the next world they shall suffer a grievous punishment;

Sura al-Ma'ida 5:54 (Malik+Hanb) - Jihad (Holy War)

5:54 O true believers, whoever of you apostatizeth from his religion, God will certainly bring [other] people [to supply his place], whom he will love, and who will love him; [who shall be] humble towards the believers, [but] severe to the unbelievers: They shall fight for the religion of God, and shall not fear the obloquy of the detracter. This is the bounty of God, he bestoweth it on whom he pleaseth: God [is] extensive [and] wise.

Sura al-Anfal 8:1 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf+Hanb) - Jihad (Holy War)
Sura al-Anfal 8:1 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf+Hanb) - Ghanima (Booty)

8:1 They will ask thee concerning the spoils: Answer, the [division of the] spoils [belongeth] unto God and the apostle. Therefore fear God, and compose the matter amicably among you; and obey God and his apostle, if ye are true believers.

Sura al-Anfal 8:12 (Malik) - Jihad (Holy War)

8:12 [Also] when thy Lord spake unto the angels, [saying], verily I am with you; wherefore confirm those who believe. I will cast a dread into the hearts of the unbelievers. Therefore strike off [their] heads. And strike off all the ends of their [fingers].

Sura al-Anfal 8:15 (Hanf+Shaf+Hanb) - Jihad (Holy War)

8:15 O true believers, when ye meet the unbelievers marching [in great numbers against you], turn not [your] backs unto them:

Sura al-Anfal 8:16 (Hanf) - Jihad (Holy War)

8:16 For whoso shall turn his back unto them on that day, unless he turneth aside to fight, or retreateth to [another] party [of the faithful], shall draw on himself the indignation of God, and his abode shall be hell; an ill journey [shall it be thither]!

Sura al-Anfal 8:17 (Hanf+Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

8:17 And ye slew not those [who were slain at Bedr your selves], but God slew them. Neither didst thou, [o Mohammed], cast [the gravel into their eyes], when thou didst [seem to] cast [it]; but God cast it, that he might prove the true believers by a gracious trial from himself; for God heareth [and] knoweth.

Sura al-Anfal 8:39 (Malik+Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

8:39 Therefore fight against them until there be no opposition [in favour of idolatry], and the religion be wholly God's. If they desist, verily God seeth that which they do:

Sura al-Anfal 8:41(Hanb) - Zakat (Religious Taxes)
Sura al-Anfal 8:41 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)
Sura al-Anfal 8:41 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf) - Ghanima (Booty)

8:41 And know that whenever ye gain any [spoils], a fifth part thereof belongeth unto God, and to the apostle, and [his] kindred, and the orphans, and the poor, and the traveller; if ye believe in God, and that which we have sent down unto our servant on the day of distinction, on the day whereon the two armies met: And God is almighty.

Sura al-Anfal 8:45 (Hanb) - Jihad (Holy War)

8:45 O true believers, when ye meet a party [of the infidels], stand firm, and remember God frequently, that ye may prosper:

Sura al-Anfal 8:46 (Hanb) - Jihad (Holy War)

8:46 And obey God and his apostle, and be not refractory, lest ye be discouraged, and your success depart from you; but persevere with patience, for God [is] with those who persevere.

Sura al-Anfal 8:56 (Hanb) - Jihad (Holy War)
Sura al-Anfal 8:56 - 'Uqud (Contracts)

8:56 As to those who enter into a league with thee, and afterwards violate their league at every [convenient] opportunity, and fear not God;

Sura al-Anfal 8:57 (Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

8:57 if thou take them in war, disperse, by [making] them [an example], those [who shall come] after them, that they may be warned;

Sura al-Anfal 8:58 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)
Sura al-Anfal 8:58 (Malik+Hanb) - 'Uqud (Contracts)

8:58 or if thou apprehend treachery from any people, throw back [their league] unto them, with like treatment; for God loveth not the treacherous.

Sura al-Anfal 8:60 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

8:60 Therefore prepare against them what force ye are able, and troops of horse, whereby ye may strike a terror into the enemy of God, and your enemy, and into other [infidels] besides them, whom ye know not, [but] God knoweth them. And whatsoever ye shall expend in the defence of the religion of God, it shall be repaid unto you, and ye shall not be treated unjustly.

Sura al-Anfal 8:61 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

8:61 And if they incline unto peace, do thou [also] incline thereto; and put thy confidence in God, for it is he who heareth [and] knoweth.

Sura al-Anfal 8:65 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

8:65 O prophet, stir up the faithful to war: If twenty of you persevere [with constancy], they shall overcome two hundred, and of there be one hundred of you, they shall overcome a thousand of those who believe not; because they are a people which do not understand.

Sura al-Anfal 8:67 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)
Sura al-Anfal 8:67 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf) - Ghanima (Booty)

8:67 It hath not been [granted] unto any prophet, that he should possess captives, until he had made a great slaughter [of the infidels] in the earth. Ye seek the accidental [goods] of this world, but God regardeth the life to come; and God is mighty and wise.

Sura al-Anfal 8:69 (Hanf) - Jihad (Holy War)
Sura al-Anfal 8:69 (Hanf) - Ghanima (Booty)

8:69 Eat therefore of what ye have acquired, [that which is] lawful, [and] good; for God [is] gracious [and] merciful.

Sura al-Anfal 8:70 (Malik+Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)
Sura al-Anfal 8:70 (Malik+Shaf) - Ghanima (Booty)

8:70 O prophet, say unto the captives who are in your hands, if God shall know any good [to be] in your hearts, he will give you better than what hath been taken from you; and he will forgive you, for God [is] gracious [and] merciful.

Sura al-Anfal 8:72 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

8:72 Moreover they who have believed, and have fled their country, and employed their substance and their persons in fighting for the religion of God, and they who have given [the prophet] a refuge [among them], and have assisted [him], these [shall be deemed] the one nearest of kin to the other. But they who have believed, but have not fled their country, shall have no [right of] kindred at all with you, until they [also] fly. Yet if they ask assistance of you on account of religion, [it belongeth] unto you [to give them] assistance; except against a people between whom and yourselves [there shall be] a league [subsisting]: And God seeth that which ye do.

Sura al-Anfal 8:73 (Hanf) - Jihad (Holy War)

8:73 And as to the infidels, let them be [deemed] of kin the one to the other. Unless ye do this, there will be a sedition in the earth, and grievous corruption.

Sura al-Anfal 8:75 (Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)
Sura al-Anfal 8:75 (Malik+Hanb) - Mirath (Inheritance)

8:75 And they who have believed since, and have fled their country, and have fought with you, these [also] are of you. And those who are related by consanguinity [shall be deemed] the nearest of kin to each other, [preferably to strangers], according to the book of God; God knoweth all things.

Sura al-Tawba 9:1 (Hanf) - Jihad (Holy War)

9:1 A declaration of immunity from God and his apostle, unto the idolaters with whom ye have entred into league.

Sura al-Tawba 9:2 (Hanf) - Jihad (Holy War)

9:2 Go to and fro in the earth [securely] four months; and know that ye shall not weaken God, and that God will disgrace the unbelievers.

Sura al-Tawba 9:3 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf+Hanb) - Jihad (Holy War)

9:3 And a declaration from God and his apostle unto the people, on the day of the greater pilgrimage, that God is clear of the idolaters, and his apostle [also]. Wherefore if ye repent, this will be better for you; but if ye turn back, know that ye shall not weaken God: And denounce unto those who believe not, a painful punishment.

Sura al-Tawba 9:4 (Hanf+Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)
Sura al-Tawba 9:4 (Shaf+Hanb) - 'Uqud (Contracts)

9:4 Except such of the idolaters with whom ye shall have entred into a league, and who afterwards shall not fail you in any instance, nor assist any [other] against you. Wherefore perform the covenant [which ye shall have made] with them, until their time [shall be elapsed]; for God loveth those who fear [him].

Sura al-Tawba 9:5 (Malik) - Salat (Liturgical Prayers)
Sura al-Tawba 9:5 (Malik) - Zakat (Religious Taxes)
Sura al-Tawba 9:5 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

9:5 And when the months [wherein ye are] not allowed [to attack them] shall be past, kill the idolaters wheresoever ye shall find them, and take them [prisoners], and besiege them, and lay wait for them in every convenient place. But if they shall repent, and observe the appointed times of prayer, and pay the legal alms, dismiss them freely; for God [is] gracious [and] merciful.

Sura al-Tawba 9:6 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

9:6 And if any of the idolaters shall demand protection of thee, grant him protection, that he may hear the word of God; and afterwards let him reach the place of his security. This [shalt thou do], because they are people which know not [the excellency of the religion thou preachest].

Sura al-Tawba 9:7 (Hanf) - Jihad (Holy War)

9:7 How shall the idolaters be admitted into a league with God and with his apostle; except those with whom ye entred into a league at the holy temple? So long as they behave with fidelity towards you, do ye [also] behave with fidelity towards them; for God loveth those who fear [him].

Sura al-Tawba 9:11 (Malik) - Salat (Liturgical Prayers)
Sura al-Tawba 9:11 (Malik) - Zakat (Religious Taxes)
Sura al-Tawba 9:11 (Malik) - Jihad (Holy War)

9:11 Yet if they repent, and observe the appointed times of prayer, and give alms, [they shall be deemed] your brethren in religion. We distinctly propound [our] signs unto people who understand.

Sura al-Tawba 9:12 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)
Sura al-Tawba 9:12 (Malik) - Ayman (Oaths)
Sura al-Tawba 9:12 (Hanb) - 'Uqud (Contracts)

9:12 But if they violate their oaths, after their league, and revile your religion, oppose the leaders of infidelity, - for there is no trust in them, - that they may desist [from their treachery].

Sura al-Tawba 9:13 - Jihad (Holy War)

9:13 Will ye not fight against people who have violated their oaths, and conspired to expel the apostle [of God]; and who of their own accord assaulted you the first time? Will ye fear them? But it is more just that ye should fear God, if ye are true believers.

Sura al-Tawba 9:14 (Hanf) - Jihad (Holy War)

9:14 Attack them [therefore]; God shall punish them by your hands, and will cover them with shame, and will give you the victory over them; and he will heal the breasts of the people who believe,

Sura al-Tawba 9:16 - Jihad (Holy War)

9:16 Did ye imagine that ye should be abandoned, whereas God did not yet know those among you who fought [for his religion], and took not [any] besides God, and his apostle, and the faithful [for their] friends? God is well acquainted with that which ye do.

Sura al-Tawba 9:24 - Jihad (Holy War)

9:24 Say, if your fathers, and your sons, and your brethren, and your wives, and your relations, and [your] substance which ye have acquired, and [your] merchandize which ye apprehend may not be sold off, and [your] dwellings wherein ye delight, be more dear unto you than God, and his apostle, and the advancement of his religion; wait, until God shall send his command: For God directeth not the ungodly people.

Sura al-Tawba 9:28 (Hanf+Shafb) - Jihad (Holy War)

9:28 O true believers, verily the idolaters are unclean; let them not therefore come near unto the holy temple after this year. And if ye fear want, [by the cutting off trade and communication with them], God will enrich you of his abundance, if he pleaseth; for God [is] knowing [and] wise.

Sura al-Tawba 9:29 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

9:29 Fight against them who believe not in God, nor in the last day, and forbid not that which God and his apostle have forbidden, and profess not the true religion, of those unto whom the scriptures have been delivered, until they pay tribute by right of subjection, and they be reduced low.

Sura al-Tawba 9:36 (Malik+Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

9:36 Moreover, the [complete] number of months with God, is twelve months, [which were ordained] in the book of God, on the day whereon he created the heavens and the earth: Of these, four are sacred. This is the right religion: Therefore deal not unjustly with your selves therein. But attack the idolaters in all [the months], as they attack you in all; and know that God is with those who fear [him].

Sura al-Tawba 9:37 (Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

9:37 Verily the transferring [of a sacred month to another month], is an additional infidelity. The unbelievers are led into an error thereby: They allow a [month] to be violated one year, and declare it sacred [another] year, that they may agree in the mumber of [months] which God hath commanded to be kept sacred; and they allow that which God hath forbidden. The evil of their actions hath been prepared for them: For God directeth not the unbelieving people.

Sura al-Tawba 9:38 (Malik+Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

9:38 O true believers, what ailed you, that, when it was said unto you, go forth [to fight] for the religion of God, ye inclined heavily towards the earth? Do ye prefer the present life to that which is to come? But the provision of this life, in [respect of] that which is to come, is but slender.

Sura al-Tawba 9:39 - Jihad (Holy War)

9:39 Unless ye go forth [when ye are summoned to war, God] will punish you with a grievous punishment; and he will place another people in your stead, and ye shall not hurt him at all; for God is almighty.

Sura al-Tawba 9:41 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

9:41 Go forth [to battle], both light, and heavy, and employ your substance and your persons for the advancement of God's religion. This will be better for you; if ye know it.

Sura al-Tawba 9:73 (Hanf+Malik+Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

9:73 O prophet, wage war against the unbelievers and the hypocrites, and be severe unto them: For their dwelling shall be hell; an unhappy journey [shall it be thither]!

Sura al-Tawba 9:91 - Zakat (Religious Taxes)
Sura al-Tawba 9:91 (Hanf+Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

9:91 In those who are weak, or are afflicted with sickness, or in those who find not wherewith to contribute [to the war], it shall be no crime [if they stay at home]; provided they behave themselves faithfully towards God and his apostle. There is no room [to lay blame] on the righteous; for God [is] gracious [and] merciful:

Sura al-Tawba 9:111 (Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

9:111 Verily God hath purchased of the true believers their souls, and their substance, [promising] them the enjoyment of paradise; [on condition that] they fight for the cause of God: Whether they slay or be slain, the promise for the same is assuredly due by the law, and the gospel, and the Koran. And who performeth his contract more faithfully than God? Rejoice therefore in the contract which ye have made. This shall be great happiness.

Sura al-Tawba 9:120 (Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

9:120 There was no [reason] why the inhabitants of Medina, and the Arabs of the desert who dwell around them, should stay behind the apostle of God, or should prefer themselves before him. This [is unreasonable]: Because they are not distressed either by thirst, or labour, or hunger, for the defence of God's true religion; neither do they stir a step, which may irritate the unbelievers; neither do they receive from the enemy any damage, but a good work is written down unto them for the same; for God suffereth not the reward of the righteous to perish.

Sura al-Tawba 9:121 (Shaf) - Jihad (Holy War)

9:121 And they contribute not any sum either small or great, nor do they pass a valley, but it is written down unto them, that God may reward them with a recompense exceeding that which they have wrought.

Wherefore be ye constant at prayer; and give alms: And adhere firmly unto God. He is your master; and he is the best master, and the best protector.

This [shall ye do]: Verily if God pleased, he could take vengeance on them, [without your assistance]; but [he commandeth you to fight his battles], that he may prove the one of you by the other. This is their description in the pentateuch, and their description in the gospel: [They are] as seed which putteth forth its stalk, and strengtheneth it, and swelleth in the ear, and riseth upon its stem; giving delight unto the sower. [Such are the Moslems described to be]: That the infidels may swell with indignation at them. God hath promised unto such of them as believe, and do good works, pardon and a great reward.

Those among you who shall have contributed and fought [in defence of the faith], before the taking [of Mecca], shall not be held equal [with those who shall contribute and fight for the same afterwards]. These shall be superiour in degree unto those who shall contribute and fight [for the propagation of the faith] after [the abovementioned success]: But unto all hath God promised a most excellent [reward]; and God well knoweth that which ye do.
