CHAPTER TWO: MOHAMMED’S LIFEWhile Muslims believe that Mohammed was not the only prophet of Islam, merely the last of many prophets beginning with Adam and including many other Biblical figures such as Abraham, Moses and Jesus, he is generally accepted as the founder of Islam as it is known today and the receiver of the Qur’an, its holy book. In this chapter we will look at his life, and see how his pagan upbringing and his contact with the heretic Christians and Jews of the area heavily influenced the development of his Islamic doctrine. Let us begin, then, with his childhood and then continue through his first marriage and call to prophethood, his years spent in Mecca, and finally his move to Madina and establishment of Islam as a military force. |
