154 - ALTERING THE PRESCRIBED ORDER OF HARVEST TITHING

Exodus 22:29 --You shall not delay to offer the first of your ripe produce and your juices. The firstborn of your sons you shall give to Me.”

The great heave offering is to be given to the priest, the first tithe to the Levite, and the second tithe is to be eaten by the owner in Jerusalem. This is the order, in which the gifts must be set apart. In the Mishnah of Terumoth, we read: “If one gives heave offering before first fruits, or first tithe before heave offering, or second tithe before first tithe, though he transgresses a negative commandment, his action is valid, for it is said, You shall not delay to offer the first of your ripe produce and your juices”.*
