17. Understanding Islam
SECTION SIX: UNDERSTANDING CONVERTS FROM ISLAM
CHAPTER FIFTEEN: ADVICE FOR THE CHURCH

15.9. Don't use Christian jargon

Often the language or vocabulary Christians use is meaningless to Muslims, or in some cases may even be offensive. I remember when I was a new convert and I was asked by someone in the Church if I had been washed in the blood of the lamb. I had no idea what the person was talking about! I actually thought it was a Christian ritual to be washed in lamb’s blood, and I found this quite disturbing. A new convert absorbs all this new information like a sponge; everything is new to them, some things might easily be misunderstood. So avoid using unnecessary jargon, or take the time to explain new terms which might be unfamiliar or whose meaning might not immediately be clear to someone who hasn’t grown up in the church.
