Mary's Hymn of Praise
After the angel Gabriel clarified to Mary, according to the Gospel, the secrets of the birth of her Son and revealed to her His unique name, title and attributes, Mary agreed, in her obedience of faith, to the Lord's plan of redemption (Luke 2:34-38).
Then the virgin traveled with haste to the house of Zechariah, the priest, and his wife Elizabeth, who, in spite of her old age, became pregnant too by the Lord's favor. There, Mary praised and magnified the LORD with her famous song which millions of people repeat in their prayers. The words of this hymn indicate her deep meditation over the holy books. She recognized the essence of the LORD of the covenant and his just ways with people, so she worshipped Him and sang:
"46 My soul magnifies the LORD,
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;
48 for He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant.
Behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.
49 For He who is mighty and whose Name is holy
has done great things for me.
50 And His mercy is on those who fear Him
from generation to generation.
51 He has shown strength with His arm
and has scattered
those who are proud in the imagination of their hearts.
52 He puts down the mighty from their thrones,
and exalts the lowly.
53 He fills the hungry with good things,
and the rich He sends away empty …
55 as He spoke to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his seed forever. "
(Luke 1:46-55)
