You shall surely rebuke your neighbor, and not bear sin because of him.”
“Admonition leads to repentance, since on being warned of his sins, and thereby being put to shame, the sinner is bound to repent. Instances of such admonition are provided by Scripture: Remember! Do not forget how you provoked the LORD your God to wrath in the wilderness… you have been rebellious against the LORD. (Deuteronomy 9:7); Yet the LORD has not given you a heart to perceive (Deuteronomy 29:4); O foolish and unwise people (Deuteronomy 32:6). In like manner, Isaiah admonished Israel in the words, Alas, sinful nation… etc. (Isaiah 1:4); The ox knows its owner (Isaiah 1:3); Because I knew that you were obstinate (Isaiah 48:4). It was even thus that the Lord commanded Isaiah to admonish the sinners, as it is said, Cry aloud, spare not… etc. (Isaiah 58:1). Similarly, all the prophets persistently admonished Israel until they were brought to repentance. It is for this reason that in each and every community in Israel a great scholar must be appointed – one that is an elder and has ever feared Heaven from his youth, being endeared to the people – who is to admonish them and lead them to repentance.”* * Mishneh Torah, Mada, Hilchoth Teshubah IV, 2
