A complete list of the commandments for which death by hanging on a tree is the penalty is to be found in “Mishneh Torah”.* The provisions of this commandment are explained in the sixth chapter of Sanhedrin. * Mishneh Torah, Shoftim, Hilchoth Sanhedrin XV, 6
To eliminate all occasion for reproach either to the memory of the condemned or to his surviving relations, Jewish law ordained the burying in the earth of all instruments employed in carrying out the death penalty by any of the four modes of execution. This applied also to the tree upon which the body of the condemned had been hung in accordance with Scriptural ordinance.* * Mishneh Torah, Shoftim, Hilchoth Sanhedrin XV, 9
