The Sharia of Moses in the TORA
Part 2 - The 365 Prohibitions of the Tora

26 - PROPHESYING IN THE NAME OF AN IDOL

Deuteronomy 18:20 -- “But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in My name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.”

Scripture prescribed the punishment, namely death, for this offence. According to the Sanhedrim, this death is by strangulation, because of the general rule that where Scripture prescribes the death penalty without more precise definition, strangulation is intended.*

* Sanh. 89a (Sonc. ed. p. 591)

The prohibition against prophesying in the name of an idol applies even if it be in support of one or more of the Divine Commandments.*
