The primary object of the commandment is the extinction of the idolatrous practices of the Seven Nations, for “Once they forswore idolatry they were to be spared.”.* In the words of Maimonides: “The object of this commandment, as is distinctly stated, is to extinguish that false opinion, in order that other men shall not be corrupted by it any more.”** * Ex.
