58 - FEARING THE HERETICS IN TIME OF WAR


Deuteronomy 7:21 -- “You shall not be terrified of them; for the LORD your God, the great and awesome God, is among you.”
Deuteronomy 3:22 -- “You must not fear them, for the LORD your God Himself fights for you.”

According to the Mishnah: “They stationed warriors in front of the soldiers and others behind them, with iron axes in their hands, and if any sought to flee they were empowered to strike him down, for flight is the first step to defeat.”*

In the “Mishneh Torah”, Maimonides states that any man who fears Israel’s foes and retreats from the line of battle, or has little heart or enthusiasm in time of was, is answerable for the loss of life occasioned through his conduct.*
