Deuteronomy 14:23 -- “And you shall eat before the LORD your God, in the place where He chooses to make His name abide, the tithe of your grain and your new wine and your oil, of the firstborn of your herds and your flocks, that you may learn to fear the LORD your God always.”
The object of Negative Commands 141-147, according to Maimonides, was as follows: “When a person enters the Sanctuary, certain emotions are produced in him; and obstinate hearts are softened and humbled. These plans and indirect means were devised by the Law, to soften and humble man’s heart on entering the holy place, in order that he might entrust himself to the sure guidance of God’s commandments. This is distinctly said in the Law: And you shall eat before the LORD your God… the tithe of your grain and your new wine and your oil, of the firstborn of your herds and your flocks, that you may learn to fear the LORD your God always. (Deuteronomy 14:23)”* * Moreh Nebuchim III, 45
