The Sharia of Moses in the TORA
Part 2 - The 365 Prohibitions of the Tora

161 - A HIGH PRIEST MARRYING A WIDOW

Leviticus 21:14 --A widow or a divorced woman or a defiled woman or a harlot--these he shall not marry; but he shall take a virgin of his own people as wife.”
Leviticus 21:7 -- “They shall not take a wife who is a harlot or a defiled woman, nor shall they take a woman divorced from her husband; for the priest is holy to his God.”

According to the Gemara of Kiddushin: “Just as a divorced woman is distinct from a zonah and a chalalah in respect of an ordinary priest, so is she distinct in respect of a high priest.”*

* Kid. 77b (Sonc. ed. p. 399)

The object of the commandments under consideration is to guard the higher sanctity of the priest: it is for this reason that he is not allowed to marry a harlot, or a woman divorced from her husband or profane. “The high priest, the noblest of the priests, may not marry even a widow, or a woman who has had sexual intercourse of any kind.”*

* Moreh Nebuchim III, 49
