The Sharia of Moses in the TORA
Part 2 - The 365 Prohibitions of the Tora

166 - A COMMON PRIEST DEFILING HIMSELF FOR ANY DEAD PERSON EXCEPT THOSE PRESCRIBED IN SCRIPTURE

Leviticus 21:1-3 -- 1 “And the LORD said to Moses, "Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them: 'None shall defile himself for the dead among his people, 2 except for his relatives who are nearest to him: his mother, his father, his son, his daughter, and his brother; 3 also his virgin sister who is near to him, who has had no husband, for her he may defile himself.”

A priest who defiles himself for any dead person other than the five* relatives for whom one is obliged to mourn is liable to whipping.

* They are: mother, father, son, daughter, brother and sister by the same father. The sages added: husband, wife, brother and sister by the same mother. (Shoftim, Hilchoth Abel II, 1; see also Pos. Comm. 37)
