Part 2 - The 365 Prohibitions of the Tora

168 - A HIGH PRIEST DEFILING HIMSELF FOR ANY DEAD BODY

Leviticus 21:11 --Nor shall he go near any dead body, nor defile himself for his father or his mother.

Although the high priest was forbidden to rend his garments from above, to let his hair grow long, or to follow the bier of one of his relatives, he was yet obliged to observe the laws of mourning.*

* Hilchoth Abel VII, 6

Certain marks of distinction were, however, observed with respect to the high priest. “When they prepare for him the first meat after the burial of his relative, all the people sit on the ground, and he sits on a bench. When comforting him, they say, ‘May we be your expiation’, and he replies, ‘Be ye blessed of Heaven.’”*

* Hilchoth Abel VII, 6
