Part 2 - The 365 Prohibitions of the Tora

180 - EATING NEVELAH

Deuteronomy 14:21 --You shall not eat anything that dies of itself; you may give it to the alien who is within your gates, that he may eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner; for you are a holy people to the LORD your God. You shall not boil a young goat in its mother's milk.”

Eating an olive’s size of the flesh of a nevelah is punished by whipping.

“Blood and nevelah, i.e. the flesh of an animal that has died of itself, are indigestible, and injurious as food; t’refah, an animal in a diseased state, is on the way to becoming nevelah.”*

* Moreh Nebuchim III, 48

For eating the flesh of an unclean animal or beast that has died of itself one incurs punishment for violation of Commandment 172; the Commandment now under consideration and the following refer only to clean animals.*

* Kedushah, Hilchoth Ma’achaloth Asuroth IV, 2
