225 - REAPING THE AFTERGROWTHS OF THE JUBILEE YEAR IN AN ORDINARY YEAR


Leviticus 25:11 -- “That fiftieth year shall be a Jubilee to you; in it you shall neither sow nor reap what grows of its own accord, nor gather the grapes of your untended vine.”

Seventeen Jubilees were counted by our ancestors from the time when they first entered the Land of Israel to the time of the Exile.* During the second Temple, although the Jubilees were not observed, since the tribes did not live on their soil (see Pos. Comm. 136, Vol. I, p. 144), the years of the Jubilee were still counted, in order to sanctify the Sabbatical Years (ibid. 3).
