7. THE ASSURED HOPE OF ETERNAL LIFE

Summary
Epilogue

Matthew 19:16-17 -- 16 Now behold, one came and said to Him, "Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?" 17 So He said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments."
Matthew 19:27-30 -- 27 Then Peter answered and said to Him, "See, we have left all and followed You. Therefore what shall we have?" 28 So Jesus said to them, "Assuredly I say to you, that in the regeneration, when the Son of Man sits on the throne of His glory, you who have followed Me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My name's sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life. 30 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.
John 3:36 -- He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.
John 4:13-14 -- 13 Jesus answered and said to her, "Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life."
John 5:24-27 -- 24 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life. 25 Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, 27 and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man.
John 10:27-31 -- 27 "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand. 30 I and My Father are one." 31 Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him.
John 12:48-50 -- 48 He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him -- the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day. 49 For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command}, what I should say and what I should speak. 50 And I know that {His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak."
John 17:1-3 -- 1 Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: "Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, 2 as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
John 8:12 -- Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life."
John 11:25-26 -- 25 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. 26 And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?"
John 14:6 -- Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
John 6:57 -- As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me.
John 14:19 -- A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also.
Matthew 26:63-66 -- 63 But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, "I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!" 64 Jesus said to him, "It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven." 65 Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, "He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His blasphemy! 66 What do you think?" They answered and said, "He is deserving of death."
Matthew 24:4-14 -- 4 And Jesus answered and said to them: "Take heed that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and will deceive many. 6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of sorrows. 9 Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name's sake. 10 And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. 11 Then many false prophets will rise up and deceive many. 12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But he who endures to the end shall be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.
Matthew 24:24-32 -- 24 For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you beforehand. 26 Therefore if they say to you, 'Look, He is in the desert!' do not go out; or 'Look, He is in the inner rooms!' do not believe it. 27 For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 28 For wherever the carcass is, there the eagles will be gathered together. 29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. 32 Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near.
Matthew 25:31-34 -- 31 "When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. 33 And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. 34 Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ' Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.'
Matthew 5:8-12 -- 8 Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. 12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Matthew 13:43 -- Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!

Summary

The apostle John summed up his gospel in one sentence: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." (John 3:16) The heavenly Father sent his only begotten Son to our corrupt world to die for all as a holy atoning sacrifice that all might be justified, and obtain complete and eternal justification by their faith, and that the promise made by the eternal Father might be fulfilled and the Holy Spirit might dwell in them. The Son has established for us the right to live with God. The spirit of the Father and the Son in us is the eternal life, the power and love of God that we might live from this day in his eternal fellowship.

Jesus was not a mystic dreamer. He was a man who lived in reality, and warned his followers of the several appearances of the spirit of the devil in our cruel world. It is one of the purposes of religions, doctrines, and philosophies to take us away from our fellowship with the Father and the Son, and deprive us of our rights in the cross of Christ that we may reform ourselves by ourselves. A liberal man who is neither strict nor rigorous becomes violent and angry when we bring Christ to him as the only way to God. Every preaching of the Gospel causes either the salvation of the believers, or the hardheartedness of those who refuse the salvation of Christ, which has been prepared for them. The attacks of Hell must become more intensive in the last days that the followers of Christ may pass through the fire of persecution. However, the word of God encourages and strengthens us, for the new life in us from God will not die if we continue as branches in the vine of Christ, as the apostle Paul reveals to us: “Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27)

The apostle Paul also reveals to us the mystery of eternal life in legal terms: "The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death." (Romans 8:2) Paul understood the life of the Holy Spirit in connection with Jesus Christ, as a law, an order, and a truth, which does not condemn and destroy us, but comforts us, gives life to us, and guides us. The new law of Christ, which is founded in his atoning death, delivers us from Moses’ law, which cannot overcome sin and death. It is because of the death of Christ that we live forever, as Paul said: "Death is swallowed up in victory. O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory? The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. … But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Corinthians 15:54-57; 1 John 5:4)

The ultimate goal of the history of the world is the next coming of Christ to gather his church together and lead them as a good shepherd to his heavenly fold, and, on the other hand, to gather the haters of the Lord for the judgment. The advent of Christ will be glorious and bright as a strong thunderbolt from east to west. The resurrection of the dead will burst the barriers of our minds and knowledge. In the last judgment, the Son of God will uncover every secret sin hidden from him and not confessed before him. The Son of God will judge every individual with his strict justice. The King of Kings will destroy Satan, Death, and Hell, after he had destroyed the false prophet, as we read in the Revelation of our Lord Jesus to his apostle John. The new being of righteousness and holiness will last in the presence of the Father and the Son in the power of the Holy Spirit who will gather the redeemed in Christ whom the unity of the Holy Spirit had drawn them to it, and he will establish them in the family of God. Are you one of them?

8. An Epilogue on the Principles of Faith

We have summarized under six headings the study of what disciples of Jesus, according to Scripture, should believe:

1. God almighty is the Father;

2. Jesus, the son of Mary, is the Son of God; and

3. The Holy Spirit is the power and love of God.

The result of believing in the unity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit is our spiritual birth and our holy conduct which manifests itself in:

4. Faith, which is founded on repentance, justification, and commitment to Christ;

5. Divine love, which is pure, forgiving, serving, and everlasting; and

6. Christian hope, which waits for the return of Christ with the manifestation of the glory of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

In other words: We believe in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit and this faith forms our life and our culture.
