Did you not know that I must be about My Father's business?" 50 But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them. 51 Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them, but His mother kept all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
John 2:2-8 -- 2 Now both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. 3 And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, "They have no wine." 4 Jesus said to her, "Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come." 5 His mother said to the servants, "Whatever He says to you, do it." 6 Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. 7 Jesus said to them, "Fill the waterpots with water." And they filled them up to the brim. 8 And He said to them, "Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast." And they took it.
Matthew 12:46-50 -- 46 While He was still talking to the multitudes, behold, His mother and brothers stood outside, seeking to speak with Him. 47 Then one said to Him, "Look, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak with You." 48 But He answered and said to the one who told Him, "Who is My mother and who are My brothers?" 49 And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, "Here are My mother and My brothers! 50 For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother."
John 19:25-27 -- 25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, "Woman, behold your son!" 27 Then He said to the disciple, "Behold your mother!" And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.

The child is not dead, but sleeping." 40 And they ridiculed Him. But when He had put them all outside, He took the father and the mother of the child, and those who were with Him, and entered where the child was lying. 41 Then He took the child by the hand, and said to her, "Talitha, cumi," which is translated, "Little girl, I say to you, arise." 42 Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years of age. And they were overcome with great amazement. 43 But He commanded them strictly that no one should know it, and said that something should be given her to eat.
Luke 7:12-15 -- 12 And when He came near the gate of the city, behold, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother; and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the city was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, He had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." 14 Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." 15 So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother.
Matthew 15:21-28 -- 21 Then Jesus went out from there and departed to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 And behold, a woman of Canaan came from that region and cried out to Him, saying, "Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David! My daughter is severely demon-possessed." 23 But He answered her not a word. And His disciples came and urged Him, saying, "Send her away, for she cries out after us." 24 But He answered and said, "I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." 25 Then she came and worshiped Him, saying, "Lord, help me!" 26 But He answered and said, "It is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the little dogs." 27 And she said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters' table." 28 Then Jesus answered and said to her, "O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire." And her daughter was healed from that very hour.
Matthew 20:20-23 -- 20 Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came to Him with her sons, kneeling down and asking something from Him. 21 And He said to her, "What do you wish?" She said to Him, "Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on the left, in Your kingdom." 22 But Jesus answered and said, "You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?" They said to Him, "We are able." 23 So He said to them, "You will indeed drink My cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with; but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared by My Father."
SummaryWe find the commandment of honoring parents as the first in the order of commandments in the Old Testament, with respect to man’s dealings with other humans. It is the first commandment with a promise. The promise is that he who honors his parents shall dwell long in the land, and shall experience the Lord’s promise. He who honors, helps, and serves his parents shall be honored and blessed by God himself with all his household and the works of his hands. Jesus confirmed this commandment several times, and repeated God’s warning that whoever curses father or mother must be put to death. (Matthew 15:4) Nobody in the world loves you more than your parents do. Let everyone, whose father and mother are still alive, think how to please them, and visit them, for they look forward to seeing their children, even if they do not give expression to it. Parents deliver the heritage of grandfathers to grandsons, and the Lord made them partners in the process of creation, even if they do not notice that. The prayer of faithful parents and their patience and forgiveness are the treasure, which accompanies man throughout his life. However, there are, of course, certain limits to our obedience to parents. We must obey God rather than men. If parents, for the sake of customs, or for fear of political results, suggest to their children that they should renounce their belief in Jesus Christ, then the children must love their parents, but must love Christ more than them. In the books of the Jews, as well as in the Qur’an, we read that leaving the religion of the fathers is a temptation, which is worse than slaughter. For the sake of doing honor to the tribe, and delivering their children from destruction, they spare no effort to bring back the lost son, or the apostate daughter, using kindness and violence, tricks and pressure, and even disinheritance. Blessed is he who recognizes and believes that the Father of Jesus Christ is also his own Father, who cares for him, even if his earthly father has at some time driven him away. The love of God surpasses all the understanding of our hearts and minds, as Christ said: “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.” (Matthew 10:37) |
