019 - Preview of Unit 11: Comparing the WORDS of the Bible and the Koran

We start Stage 3 with a survey on how the Bible and the Koran can be compared on the level of words. For this purpose we outline the steps we took using computers to produce a complete comparative concordance of the Bible and the Koran in Arabic. These steps are the following:

text entry of the complete Arabic texts of the Bible and the Koran into a computer (Step 1); then

the successive production of a word list (Step 2),

of a sorted word list (Step 3),

of a vocabulary list (Step 4), and

of a root list (Step 5) for the combined Arabic texts of the Bible and the Koran with the help of computer software developed for this purpose; then

the grammatical analysis of each word in the combined vocabulary list of the Bible and the Koran (Step 6); and finally

the production of an exhaustive comparative concordance of the Bible and the Koran in Arabic encompassing more than 14,000 pages (Step 7).

This valuable tool, completed in 1997, is an asset in our investigations of words and teachings at the borderline between the Bible and the Koran.

This Unit 11 can be used as a reference manual with statistical information on how the Bible and the Koran compare on the level of words.

At the end of this Unit 11 we also present English alternatives to such an Arabic comparative concordance, so that you can compare words and teachings in the Bible and the Koran even if you do not understand Arabic.
