029 - Preview of Unit 20: ACADEMIC Approaches to the Comparative Study of the Bible and the Koran

Finally, we look at agendas of academic scholars, whose thinking is governed by enlightened humanism or secular rationalism. They place their complete trust in the existence and unsurpassable power of human reason and look at both the Bible and the Koran on the basis of this their rationalistic faith.

In an overview we will point out some endeavors taken by scholars to assess how the Bible and the Koran can be correlated on the background of more or less pure reason.

As an illustration we will summarize the agenda behind the (so far) eight volumes published by the Inarah Project, which has tried to rationalistically prove that Islam grew out of a Christian sect in the Middle East.

Specifically we will outline how the obscure letters at the beginning of 29 Suras in the Koran can then be interpreted as constituting abbreviations of liturgical elements used by Syriac Christians in their church services prior to Islam.
