STAGE 2 - Biblical PASSAGES and Biblical PERSONALITIES in the Koran
UNIT 04 - COMPILE: Biblical PERSONALITIES in the Koran

074 - ELIJAH, the Prophet, in Bible and Koran

BIBLE (252 verses): 1 Kings 17:1 to 2 Kings 2:14 -- 2 Chronicles 21:12-15

KORAN (11 verses): Suras al-An'am 6:85 -- al-Saffat 37:123-132

BIBLICAL SAMPLE: Our choice here is the event of Elijah challenging the Israelites not to worship Baal but Yahweh, their God, because this is the only passage about Elijah that has left traces in the Koran. We quote here 1 Kings 18:20-21 -- “20 So Ahab (the king) sent to all the people of Israel and gathered the prophets together at Mount Carmel. 21 And Elijah came near to all the people and said, ‘How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.’ And the people did not answer him a word.”
KORANIC SAMPLE: This passage from 1 Kings has influenced the only passage in the Koran that seems to mention Elijah. It is found in Sura al-Saffat 37:123-132 -- “123 And (truly) Ilyas (Elijah) (truly) is one of the messengers (of Allah). 124 (It was then,) when he said to his people, ‘Will you not seek refuge (with Allah)? 125 Do you call upon a Ba'l (Baal) and leave the best of (all) creators? 126 Allah (is) your Lord and the Lord of your (very) first forefathers.’ 127 Then they accused him of having lied. But they will (truly) be brought (to their punishment), 128 except the faithful (slavish) worshippers of Allah. 129 And We left for him (as a honorific formula to be uttered) among later generations: 130 ‘Peace (be) upon Ilyas (Elijah)!’ 131 (Truly) thus do we reward those, who do good. 132 (Truly) he was (one) of our believing slaves.”
