133 - Non-Biblical Source 1: The context of the non-biblical text, which influenced the Koran


CONTEXT: This book, entitled “The Life of Adam and Eve”, relates the experiences of Adam and his wife after they were expelled from the biblical Garden of Eden. The context of the passage that we are going to quote is the following: Adam and Eve want to repent of their sin, which they committed in paradise, by fasting up to forty days and nights in the cold waters of a river. They carry out this act of penance by Eve standing in the cold waters of the Tigris River and Adam standing in the cold waters of the Jordan River. Satan comes as an angel of light to Eve and convinces her that her act of repentance will be useless. Eve breaks off her act of penance, whereupon the angel of light appears as Satan. Eve then goes with Satan to Adam, who asks Satan in horror, why he deceived his wife twice: once in the Garden of Eden resulting in their expulsion and now a second time resulting in her terminating her only way to get back into Paradise. The Devil then replied Adam with what is written in the very short chapters 12 to 17 of “The Life of Adam and Eve”:
