183 - Adam 08 - Allah's covenant with Adam

Texts -- BIBLE: None. See, however, Hosea 6:7, which speaks of Adam transgressing a covenant. ---- ADDED to KORAN: Sura Ta Ha 20:115

Contrast 1 -- BIBLE: In Genesis we find NO mention of a covenant of God being concluded with Adam. However, in Hosea 6:7 we read: “But like Adam they transgressed the covenant; there they dealt faithlessly with me.” -- KORAN: “And (truly) we covenanted with Adam previously, but he forgot (the covenant?).” (20:115) >> Meaning >> BIBLE: The commandment not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil of Genesis is compared by Hosea to the covenant that God made with the Israelites through Moses on Mount Horeb. Both Adam and the Israelites transgressed God's commands. -- KORAN: It is not clear what the content of the covenant was, which Allah concluded with Adam. Maybe it was the commandment regarding a tree in the Jannah garden. (See details in Step -185 - Adam 10 below.)

Contrast 2 -- BIBLE: Adam is NOT portrayed as someone, who forgot the commandment of God not to eat of the tree in the Garden of Eden. -- KORAN: Here Adam is described as someone, who “forgot”, possibly the covenant not to draw near the tree in the Jannah garden (see Step -185 - Adam 10 below). >> Meaning >> BIBLE: Adam is NOT excused for sinning against God's commandment, by supposing he had forgotten that commandment. He is described as knowingly acting against God's command. -- KORAN: Adam here is excused by being described as forgetful, especially with respect to what Allah had covenanted him with (which may be the commandment of Allah). This is possibly the reason why the Koran includes a verse, in which Allah restituted Adam after his sin (see Step -196 - Adam 20 below).
