10.3 - Adam in Genesis 3

192 - Adam 16 - The LORD God condemned Adam's wife

Texts -- BIBLE: Genesis 3:16 ---- OMITTED in KORAN

Contrast 1 -- BIBLE: Yahweh then turned to the woman and said, “I will greatly multiply your troubles in pregnancy; with pain you will give birth to your sons.” -- KORAN: There is NO relationship of the sin of Adam's wife to her pregnancy. Also, Allah did NOT promise her pain in childbirth. >> Meaning >> BIBLE: Adam and his wife knew that their first assignment from God was to “be fruitful and multiply” (1:28). They had not yet fulfilled this commandment. And the woman was not satisfied with only intimate spiritual relations to what is good, i.e. obedience to God, but also experimented with intimate spiritual relations to what is evil, i.e. disobedience to God. So, Yahweh condemned her with a punishment that concerns her intimate relations to Adam: being fruitful with him. The fruit of their intimacy, i.e. her pregnancy and childbirth, were to be laden with troubles and pain. This way she could feel and always be reminded of the troubles and the pain that her breech of confidence towards God caused in Yahweh, when he saw that she was not satisfied with intimate spiritual relations to him alone. -- KORAN: This was totally OMITTED in the Koran. Why? On the one hand the Koran omitted all spiritual details about the sin of Adam and his woman: NO tree of knowledge of good and evil in the Koran that could reveal the spiritual dimensions of their sin. On the other hand, Allah did NOT command Adam and his mate to “be fruitful and multiply”. This was because Adam and his wife according to the Koran were not created such that they could procreate on their own. Rather, the Koran revealed that every step in the process of procreation (from the act of fathering a child, through the stages of pregnancy up to the act of giving birth of a child, see e.g. Suras 56:58+59 -- 23:13+14 -- 30:40) is a direct act of creation by Allah. This is why the woman could not be punished by Allah's acts of creation in her pregnancy and childbirth. It would be like Allah punishing himself in making his acts of creation in the woman unnecessarily tedious.

Contrast 2 -- BIBLE: Yahweh added to this: “Your desire will be toward your husband and he will rule over you.” -- KORAN: There is NO attraction to the husband and NO ruling of the husband over the woman in connection with punishment for their sinful slip in the Koran. >> Meaning >> BIBLE: Yahweh here gives another sign to remind the woman of what she had done to him as her good God. She should have been, spiritually speaking, only attracted to the good Yahweh and what pleases him, instead she was also spiritually attracted to opposition to Yahweh and to what displeases him. In condemning her with the punishment of a desire toward her husband, Yahweh is constantly reminding her that this was what her spiritual relation to Yahweh should have looked like. The rule of Adam over her is a constant reminder of the rule of Yahweh over the woman in condemning her to this punishment. Part of this is later on taken up in Ephesians 5:22-33, where this relationship of the woman to her husband models the relationship of the church to Christ. -- KORAN: Again, all this was OMITTED in the Koran. Why? The woman was NOT created to form an indissoluble unity of cooperation with Adam, and therefore could not be qualified here with subordination towards Adam. Also, again, the nature of the sin of the woman was SUPPRESSED by omitting the nature of the forbidden tree (tree of knowledge of good and evil). These two circumstances precluded such a condemnation of the woman. Also, this is the reason why in the Koran the relationship of man and woman to each other does NOT model the relationship of Allah to Muslims.
