The Sharia of Moses in the TORA
Part 1 - The 248 Positive Commandments of the Tora

184 - REMOVING SOURCES OF DANGER FROM OUR HABITATIONS

Deuteronomy 22:8 -- "When you build a new house, then you shall make a parapet for your roof, that you may not bring guilt of bloodshed on your household if anyone falls from it.”

An important feature of this commandment is that, just as it makes it obligatory to remove all obstacles that might imperil other people’s lives, it equally imposes upon every one the obligation to safeguard his own life.*

* Mishneh Torah, Nezikin, Hilchoth Rotzeach U-Shemirath Nefesh XI, 8

“In like manner it is obligatory to remove and to guard against every obstacle which constitutes a threat to life or limb, taking exceeding great care in this matter, as it is said, Only take heed to yourself, and diligently keep yourself (Deuteronomy 4:9). He who exposes himself to any such dangers thereby fails to fulfill a positive commandment, and also transgresses the negative commandment contained in the words, that you may not bring guilt of bloodshed on your household (Deuteronomy 22:8).”*

* Mishneh Torah, Nezikin, Hilchoth Rotzeach U-Shemirath Nefesh XI, 4
