276 - A JUDGE BEING DETERRED BY FEAR FROM GIVING A JUST JUDGMENT

Deuteronomy 1:17 -- “You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small as well as the great; you shall not be afraid in any man's presence, for the judgment is God's. The case that is too hard for you, bring to me, and I will hear it.”

This commandment applies to the case where the judge has already undertaken to try the case. So long as he has not undertaken it, he is free to withdraw; but if he has been appointed by the government or other authority to act as judge, he is bound in all circumstances to disregard all threats, and to proceed fearlessly in the execution of justice.*

* Shoftim, Hilchoth Sanhedrin XXII, 1
