281 - A JUDGE LISTENING TO ONE OF THE LITIGANTS IN THE ABSENCE OF ANOTHER
Exodus 23:1.7 -- 1 “You shall not circulate a false report. Do not put your hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness. … 7 Keep yourself far from a false matter; do not kill the innocent and righteous. For I will not justify the wicked.”
According to the sages: “There are three offences for which one is punished in this world and forfeits his portion in the World to Come. These are idolatry, incest and murder; but slander is equal to all the three put together… To indulge in slanderous talk is like a denial of the fundamental principle of religion, as it is written, who have said, "With our tongue we will prevail; our lips are our own;* who is lord over us? (Psalms 12:4)”
