E - Commandments of Christ related to Principles of FAITH in the New Covenant
3. WHO IS JESUS THE SON OF MARY?
Summary
Luke 1:30-35 -- 30 Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call
His name JESUS.
32 He will be
great, and will be called the
Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him
the throne of His father David.
33 And He
will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and
of His kingdom there will be no end."
34 Then Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I do not know a man?"
35 And the angel answered and said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also,
that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.
Matthew 3:16-17 -- 16 When He had been
baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold,
the heavens were opened to Him, and
He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove
and alighting upon Him.
17 And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, "
This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
John 1:33-34 -- 33 I (John the Baptist) did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, '
Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is
He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.'
34 And I have seen and testified that
this is the Son of God."
Matthew 4:2-11 -- 2 And when He had
fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward
He was hungry.
3 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, "If You are
the Son of God, command that these stones become bread."
4 But He answered and said, "It is written, '
Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. ' "
5 Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple,
6 and said to Him, "If You are
the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: 'He shall give His angels charge over you, and in their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.' "
7 Jesus said to him, "It is written again, '
You shall not tempt the LORD your God. ' "
8 Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.
9 And he said to Him, "All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me."
10 Then Jesus said to him, "
Away with you, Satan! For it is written, '
You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve. ' "
11 Then the devil left Him, and behold,
angels came and ministered to Him.
Matthew 8:28-29 -- 28 When He had come to the other side, to the country of the Gergesenes, there met Him two demon-possessed men, coming out of the tombs, exceedingly fierce, so that no one could pass that way. 29 And suddenly they cried out, saying, "What have we to do with You,
Jesus, You Son of God? Have
You come here to
torment us (demons) before the time?"
Matthew 14:26-33 -- 26 And when the disciples saw Him
walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out for fear.
27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, "
Be of good cheer! It is I;
do not be afraid."
28 And Peter answered Him and said, "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water."
29 So He said, "
Come." And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus.
30 But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying, "Lord, save me!"
31 And immediately
Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him, and said to him, "
O you of little faith, why did you doubt?"
32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.
33 Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, "
Truly You are the Son of God."
Matthew 16:15-17 -- 15 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"
16 Simon Peter answered and said, "
You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."
17 Jesus answered and said to him, "
Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but
My Father who is in heaven.
John 5:17-24 -- 17 But Jesus answered them, "
My Father has been working until now, and
I have been working."
18 Therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, because He not only broke the Sabbath, but also
said that God was His Father, making Himself equal with God.
19 Then Jesus answered and said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you,
the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.
20 For
the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel.
21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so
the Son gives life to whom He will.
22 For
the Father judges no one, but
has committed all judgment to the Son,
23 that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him. 24 Most assuredly, I say to you,
he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.
John 6:37-48 -- 37 "
All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and
the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.
38 For
I have come down from heaven, not
to do My own will, but
the will of Him who sent Me.
39 This is the will of
the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me
I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. 40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day." 41 The Jews then complained about Him, because He said, "
I am the bread which came down from heaven."
42 And they said, "Is not this
Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that He says, '
I have come down from heaven'?"
43 Jesus therefore answered and said to them, "Do not murmur among yourselves.
44 No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. 45 It is written in the prophets, 'And they shall all be taught by God.' Therefore
everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me.
46 Not that anyone has seen the Father, except
He who is from God; He has seen the Father.
47 Most assuredly, I say to you,
he who believes in Me has everlasting life.
John 10:27-36 -- 27 "
My sheep hear
My voice, and
I know them, and
they follow Me.
28 And
I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.
29 My Father, who
has given them to Me, is greater than all; and
no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand.
30 I and My Father are one."
31 Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him.
32 Jesus answered them, "Many good works I have shown you from
My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?"
33 The Jews answered Him, saying, "For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because
You, being a Man, make Yourself God."
34 Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your law, 'I said, "You are gods" '?
35 If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken),
36 do you say of
Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, 'You are blaspheming,' because
I said, 'I am the Son of God'?
Matthew 17:5 -- While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, "
This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!"
John 14:6-11 -- 6 Jesus said to him, "
I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
7 If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him."
8 Philip said to Him, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us."
9 Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip?
He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, 'Show us the Father'?
10 Do you not believe that
I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but
the Father who dwells in Me does the works.
11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.
John 16:1-3 -- 1 "These things
I have spoken to you,
that you should not be made to stumble.
2 They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that
whoever kills you will think that he offers God service.
3 And
these things they will do to you because they have not known the Father nor Me.
Matthew 22:41-45 -- 41 While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
42 saying, "What do you think about
the Christ? Whose Son is He?" They said to Him, "
The Son of David."
43 He said to them, "How then does David in the Spirit call Him '
Lord', saying:
44 'The LORD said to my Lord, "
Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool" '?
45 If David then calls Him 'Lord,' how is He his Son?"
Matthew 26:63-68 -- 63 But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, "I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if
You are the Christ, the Son of God!" 64 Jesus said to him, "
It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you,
hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven."
65 Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, "He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His blasphemy!
66 What do you think?" They answered and said, "He is deserving of death."
67 Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and others struck Him with the palms of their hands, 68 saying, "Prophesy to us,
Christ! Who is the one who struck You?"
John 19:7 -- The Jews answered him, "We have a law, and according to our law He ought to die, because
He made Himself the Son of God."
Matthew 27:39-43 -- 39 And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads
40 and saying, "
You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! If
You are the Son of God, come down from the cross."
41 Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the scribes and elders, said,
42 He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If
He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him.
43 He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for
He said, 'I am the Son of God.' "
Matthew 27:54 -- So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, "
Truly this was the Son of God!"
Revelation 3:21-22 -- 21 "To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. 22 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches."
Summary
In the New Testament, God, Satan, the angels, the demons, the disciples, and Jesus’ opponents all spoke, positively or negatively, about Jesus as the Son of God. Moreover, Jesus himself explicitly asserted his divinity and manhood. So, why do the Jews and the Muslims flare up as soon as we testify to them that Jesus is the Son of God? Since the appearance of the prophets in the Old Testament, who called all the gods and idols “nothing”, and said that the Lord is the only unique God, the belief in a god other than God, as well as the belief in a son of God, has become to the children of Abraham an unconceivable thing and a rejected blasphemy. This is why Jesus, in his love, testified to the monotheists, his UNITY with the Father, and that He is in the Father, and the Father in Him.
He who wants to know Jesus must understand his love and his humility towards his heavenly Father. The Son said many times: "Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner." (John 5:19) Thereafter Jesus confessed: “The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.” (John 14:10) Jesus kept denying himself, and in his intercessory prayer he confessed: “I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. I have manifested Your name to the men whom You have given Me out of the world. They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word.” (John 17:4, 6) Because of the HUMILITY of Jesus, God gave the Son all power in heaven and on earth (Matthew 28: 18) and as such Jesus confessed in his prayer to his Father: “And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine.” (John 17:10)
The devil and his followers were aware of this mystery from long ago. They tremble at the presence of the Son of God, for the Father has committed all judgment to the Son. The devil tempted Jesus many times to keep him away from the humiliation of the cross, but when Jesus had completed the reconciliation between God and sinners though his humble atoning sacrifice, the Evil one had no more right to accuse the believers of their trespasses. The Son of God overcame the devil on the cross, as Jesus reconciled us with his Father. Thus, the words of the apostle John are materialized in all continents: "He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life." (1 John 5:12)
We also find evidences of the divinity of Jesus and his blessed works in other paragraphs of this series of meditations.
